General Purpose/Philosophy: USA Swimming is the National Governing Body for the sport of swimming in the United States. USA Swimming promotes the culture of swimming by creating opportunities for swimmers and coaches of all backgrounds to participate and advance the sport through clubs, events and education. Our membership is comprised of swimmers of every age and ability, all the way up to the Olympic Team, as well as coaches and volunteers. USA Swimming is responsible for selecting and training teams for international competition, including the Olympic Games, and strives to serve the sport through its core objectives: Build the base, Promote the sport, Achieve competitive success. We administer competitive swimming in accordance with the Olympic & Amateur Sports Act and are committed to providing a safe and positive environment for all members. USA Swimming is a 400,000-member service organization, including athlete and non-athlete members, and maintains an annual operating budget of approximately $40 million. Overview: USA Swimming’s Commercial Business Unit serves as the marketing and promotions arm of the organization with the main objective of growing the commercial viability of the organization. The Business Unit’s core functions include: Sponsor Sales & Servicing Membership growth, retention and new product development Revenue Generation Business Intelligence & commercial data analytics Promotions & Marketing Campaigns for USA Swimming and the USA Swimming Foundation Public Relations & Media Services USA Swimming Productions National & International media and broadcasting rights & agreements Management Splash Magazine Creative Services (Graphics, Video) Merchandising Events/Tickets Job Summary: The Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) is a key member of the Strategy Team and is responsible for helping to develop and implement the strategic efforts that lead the organization toward the accomplishment of its mission and objectives. The CCO leads and manages the Commercial Business Unit and will be expected to drive the commercialization efforts of the organization including developing, selling, and implementing integrated marketing, sponsorship, and television initiatives. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Strategic Commercial Growth: Implement and execute short- and long-term plans and budgets to achieve marketing, merchandising, and channel development goals and financial objectives, including the establishment and achievement of key performance indicators (KPI’s) Generate revenues that enhance and expand USA Swimming’s activities, programs and marketable assets Stimulate media interest and ensure regular contact with target media and timely responses to media requests Create a solid network of strategic partnerships in support of the organization’s key priorities and bottom line goals Devise a robust social media/digital engagement and intelligence capability to measure ongoing engagement with the organization’s programs and advocacy efforts and reactivate dormant sponsors through targeted retention campaigns Partner with Business Intelligence to incorporate data analytics to drive sponsor engagement and growth Identify revenue opportunities and create a strategic plan to provide solutions that align with existing or new service offerings Participate in creating and presenting pitches Develop and track a plan for growing the business portfolio Determine the quality and operational capabilities of the organization and drive additional sales Executive Marketing Leadership: Create, implement, oversee, and measure the success of a comprehensive, culturally competent marketing strategy designed to enhance USA Swimming’s position within the marketplace; facilitate internal and external communications, and support the organization’s overall strategy and objectives (keeping nonprofit resources and realities in mind) Liaise with other areas of the organization to guide a unified approach to serving members and sponsors to meet market demands Further define, protect, and promote the organization’s brand Oversee the design, production, and distribution of the organization’s public relations, marketing, sales, and customer service activities, promotional campaigns, and print and electronic materials Work to optimize thought leaders and actively engage key stakeholders around shared goals to elevate the sport of swimming Plan, organize, and align corporate communications, advocacy, channel development, strategic partnerships, and digital engagement functions and operations and ensure they project USA Swimming’s unique voice Develop and manage the Commercial Division budget Effectively represent USA Swimming in the corporate and television marketplace Ensure thorough and timely fulfillment of contractual obligations Provide editorial vision and developing strategies to drive content to our communications properties Establish and implement branding strategies that advance the image and values of our sport Lead a highly efficient team of communications, advocacy, marketing, and business development professionals; oversee nine direct reports and eight indirect reports Qualifications Bachelor’s degree or higher Executive-level experience in journalism, communications, advertising, public relations, marketing, and sponsorship Executive level experience in professional sports related organizations, specifically tickets sales, premium hospitality sales & service, significant integrated corporate sponsorship development and other revenue generating channels Strategic business development experience with C-Level client relationships both domestically and internationally Ability to work effectively and connect successfully across all levels of the organization, from volunteers to Board members Excellent written and verbal communication skills Strong leadership, motivational, and problem-solving skills Strong organization and time management skills Proficiency with computers and database software Enthusiasm for swimming, learning, and the Olympic movement Ability to travel and work effectively while away from national office Interested candidates may submit their resume and cover letter via email to
