About This Role The Athletic is seeking a Payroll Manager to play an integral part in all things payroll. The role is a "build from the ground up" type of opportunity that involves setting up new systems and processes, onboarding new team members and processing payroll. You should be a team player who is comfortable working in a fast-paced startup environment. You'll have the opportunity to roll up your sleeves and play a vital role in the development and growth of the payroll infrastructure as The Athletic continues to expand around the globe. Responsibilities Process semi-monthly payroll for exempt & non-exempt employees in ADP for US and CAN Ensure off-cycle payments related to employee hires, promotions and terminations are processed accurately and timely Maintain and reconcile payroll related general ledger accounts Partner with the People Team to ensure all employee changes are captured Manage and reconcile carrier invoices with employees’ elections to ensure withholdings are accurately deducted Participate in the annual financial statements audit and be the main contact for all payroll related audit testing Develop and maintain corporate policies, while continuously improving and standardizing the payroll processes and internal controls Payroll software administration; improve system and monitor metrics Stay up to date on new guidance and ensure federal, state, local and international payroll tax compliance Internal point of contact for employee payroll inquiries Maintain confidentiality of sensitive data Conduct year-end reporting for W-2’s Calculate, complete and manage payments to all state and municipal tax authorities Manage our internal employee expense reimbursement program Ad hoc projects as needed Requirements Bachelor's Degree CPP (preferred) FPC & CEP (nice to have)
