KTAR News is looking for its next great Editor/Anchor! This role is a hybrid role. Breaking news coverage is at the core of what we do at KTAR as well as covering top, local stories that affect our community. KTAR and KTAR.com thrive on unique content and approaching stories in a way unlike anybody else. We need original ideas, a contemporary way of telling stories, and a knack for finding that story that makes our talk show hosts want to talk with YOU! We're asking for a different player at the table. Someone who will play a key role in all areas of the newsroom, including writing and editing news stories, anchoring our evening news program and at time, reporting in the field or from the newscenter. Bring your A-game digital experience to the table - being in sync with social media platforms and how to use them in all roles of the newsroom is key to joining our team. Our team members regularly get called on to file for the network, so expectations are high.
As a hybrid editor and anchor, be an effective team member and make a full contribution to the success of the station. Write and report news on air in clear, concise and accurate manner on deadline. Perform live field reports, with proficient ad lib skills, and the ability to use natural and ambient sound in field reports. Enterprise news sources for original news content for air and for the website. Contribute daily to make KTAR the leading provider of timely, relevant news and information. As an editor, coordinate reporter assignments, listen to the scanners, make beat calls, text and tweet using the station's accounts, conduct phone interviews and much more. This full time position requires you to be afternoons and evenings, with the potential of some mornings as fill-in, and the schedule will vary based on vacations and sick relief. It's the perfect "foot in the door" opportunity for an up-and-comer or a great job for someone who just wants to keep their news chops fresh.
Generate story ideas, coordinate information and assign personnel as needed. Coordinate information among radio reporters, online colleagues, show producers and studio engineers.
Compile daily "Daybook" and file future daybook items.
Monitor public service agency scanners/social media for breaking stories and assign personnel necessary to cover the story.
Read news wires/social media regularly and other news sources (email) for story ideas.
Coordinate with television news partner if needed for stories.
Assemble and send out scheduled text updates and text alerts when needed.
Ability to effectively communicate with digital and talk show departments.
Write strong, effective news stories in a fast-paced and ever changing news day.
Be ready to join talk shows to comment on the news finding mission of stories you may be assigned to write.
Perform live in-studio reports within newscasts of up to four times an hour, with possibly more added in the event of breaking news
Present compelling, informative, personable and impactful newscasts with an emphasis on local and breaking news.
Report news in a way that is constantly fresh, new and exciting, unique and exciting ways while maintaining the integrity of news standards.
This position is tasked with primarily anchoring newscasts between 6 and 10p.
During holidays, vacations or breaking news, you may be asked to fill in at different times of day and/or weekends.
The first part of the shift will be that of editor, and a potential to also report from the field or the newscenter.
Perform live field and in-studio reports on assigned stories.
Maintain community contacts and develop specialties to enterprise news stories.
Be a self-starter and quick thinker while reporting in-house and on-location. Placing an extreme emphasis on conversational writing and creative presentation during live and taped reports.
Consistently contributes original story and long form report ideas.
Transcribe broadcast stories into original web content.
Stay updated on all news sources.
Take on special assignment and in depth pieces, longform reporting.
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's Degree in broadcast journalism or Associate's Degree plus at least two years of experience in a professional newsroom.
Minimum of one year of experience as an active reporter, anchor or editor in a professional radio/TV journalism environment.
Strong broadcast writing, news judgment and computer skills.
Knowledge of newswire services and a working knowledge of computer skills.
Social media savvy includes experience going live on social media platforms, live tweeting, and actively posting photos and videos.
Ability to develop and maintain news sources.
Aggressive attitude with a strong desire to advance in broadcasting media. A news junkie.
Quick learner who is fully committed to meeting the challenge.
Ability to dig up stories, enterprise news a must.
Excellent digital audio editing/technical remote broadcast skills.
NewsBoss platform experience preferred.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, BUT NOT REQUIRED:
A person with established relations in the Hispanic community and able to develop good rapport with community leaders.
Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Prefer someone who has worked in the broadcasting environment relating to the Hispanic community.
Receive, process, and maintain information through oral and/or written communication effectively.
Substantial physical movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
Ability to extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction with good eye and hand coordination.
Lift, move, and carry up to 20 pounds on occasion.
