Job Description Manage a portfolio of athletic leadership gift prospects and oversee the portfolio activity of Leadership Gift Officers working with athletic prospects. The Director will travel regularly throughout the U.S. in order to identify, qualify, cultivate and solicit prospects. Ensuring both visit activity goals and pipeline goals are met for the Campaign for Boston University. The goal is to hit or exceed $50 million for the Campaign for the benefit of BU Athletics, in coordination with other university leadership gift strategies. Monitor the progress of individual, and when appropriate, corporate and foundation prospects as they are moved from initial contact through solicitation and stewardship. - 50%
Reporting to the Vice President for Alumni Relations, this position works closely with the Senior Vice President for Development, Director of Athletics, Executive Director of Annual Giving, head coaches and other Athletics staff. Responsible for planning and advancing athletic fundraising programs and priorities and securing gifts to advance the Campaign for Boston University and meet Campaign goals for Athletics. Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward leadership gifts for the benefit of BU Athletics. Provide oversight and management of three full-time Athletic Development staff members. Develop solicitation strategies and coordinate the involvement of other administrators, coaches, alumni and volunteers. Facilitate the development outreach with athletic prospects.
Participate as a member of the Director of Athletics' senior staff and update senior athletic administrators on issues pertinent to development. Provide strategic advice and counsel to the Director of Athletics on issues pertaining to fundraising and alumni relations, including strategizing to create and implement effective stewardship and donor engagement opportunities such as events, gifts, and special access. - 10%
Maintain list of top athletic prospects and maintain moves management plan for each of these primary prospects. Facilitate travel for athletics fundraising by senior administrative staff and coaches. Working in conjunction with leadership gift officers and school-based development officers, and other athletic staff the Director will be responsible for the setting of full itineraries for AD, head coaches and administrators for athletic prospects. - 15%
Provide oversight and performance management for Athletic Development Staff of three full-time professionals, including hiring, disciplinary action and performance evaluations. Set clear objectives and actively support their efforts. Specific attention should be paid to the identification of new prospects, including strategic management of the Athletics annual fund. - 20%
Establish long-range goals and objectives for athletic development programs and activities that reflect priorities for private support. Prepare operating plan designed to facilitate achievement of these goals and objectives as a component of the University-wide major gifts plan in preparation for a successful closure of current campaign. - 5%
More than eight years of relevant or related experience is required. Proven ability to solicit and close six and seven figure gifts. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and demonstrated ability to build relationships in a highly collaborative environment is a must, as is the ability to "manage up" in working directly with managers; engaging laterally by building relationships of trust and mutual value added with colleagues across campus; and managing "down" to ensure the support and cooperation of staff both within and outside of Development.
