As Special Olympics Maryland prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary, we are putting together a historical timeline and archives following Special Olympics Maryland’s growth through communities throughout the state. Reporting to the Vice President for Communications and Brand Management, the Archives Intern will have the opportunity to organize Special Olympics Maryland documents, photos, and other resources to create a usable, well-organized and visually appealing timeline and archives for our many constituents to enjoy. It is likely that this project will not be completed in the timeframe of one semester. This intern will lay the groundwork for a multi-year project. Specific Responsibilities: - Organize digital photo and video archives. - Scan and organize photographs and news clippings. - Identify key interview topics and themes for further investigation. - Interview current and past athletes, family members, volunteers, and staff members. - Include integral Special Olympics Maryland programs including the Law Enforcement Torch Run, Polar Bear Plunge, and Summer Games as part of the history - Collaborate with Maryland Historical Society and other organizations to gain perspective on the holistic impact that Special Olympics Maryland has had throughout the state. - Merge print documents and oral histories together to produce a cohesive view of the growth and impact of Special Olympics Maryland. - Present key findings to athletes and families, staff, and board. Learning Outcomes: The Athlete Leadership Intern will gain experience in the following: - Research - Historical Writing and Reporting - Visual Design - Archiving - Oral History Collection Desired Qualifications: - Current college student seeing a credit-based internship. - Strong interpersonal skills - Strong attention to detail and experience working with primary and secondary research sources - Ability to work independently and in team settings - Comfort with technology including social media, Microsoft Office, email, etc. - Enjoys working with people, good communication skills and sense of humor.
